The foundation of armored transportation goes as far back as the movement of big freight. Traditionally, smaller valuables were transported into a more’cloak and dagger’ fashion. Carriers would attempt to match with other travellers so that they did not reveal the value of their freight. This strategy doesn’t work, however, when the precious cargo is big.
Early transports were caravans with armed employees. Even Spanish galleons were armed with cannons to battle would-be thieves on excursions to the New World. Afterwards, stagecoaches become common. They were outfitted with reinforced lockboxes while guards sat’shotgun,’ literally carrying a shotgun for defense. This is the source of the colloquial term now shouted to secure rights to the front passenger seat.
Tanks, armored personnel carriers, and even an armored Rolls-Royce were developed from the 1910s for the new kind of military combat. Armored cars allowed for cellular anti-aircraft guns as well as for secure movement of valuable freight. Blindado of those vehicles directed a Chicago company named Brink’s to beginning armoring school buses for carrying money from the 1920s. The Brinks armored bus has been closely followed with a Model-T full of armed guards.
Many parts of these early armored cars were made from vulnerable materials. Through time, the substances utilized in armored transport have shifted from glass and wood to more durable and chemical proof material. It is hardened by either heat treatment or by the inclusion of nickel and chromium during production. Windows are now made from thick plastic glass and bulletproof optical plastic.
